A new U.K.-based Chick-fil-A will be closing after a shopping center said they would not renew its lease following a campaign by pro-gay protesters to shut down the restaurant.
"We always look to introduce new concepts for our customers; however, we have decided on this occasion that the right thing to do is to only allow Chick-Fil-A to trade with us for the initial six-month pilot period, and not to extend the lease any further," the Oracle shopping center in Reading, England, said in a statement, according to BBC.
Activists from the gay and transgender rights group, Reading Pride, had protested the Chick-fil-A over the fast-food chain's support of Christian organizations, like the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Salvation Army.
The group said they would continue to protest until the location shuts down when its lease runs out, saying the organization is hostile to gay rights.
"Our giving has always focused on youth and education. We have never donated with the purpose of supporting a social or political agenda," Chick-fil-A responded in a statement. "There are 145,000 people - black, white; gay, straight; Christian, non-Christian - who represent Chick-fil-A."
Earlier this month, an online hoax was pushed that claimed Chick-fil-A was supporting a law to execute gay people.
