ALLENTOWN, Pa. | An Allentown man faces robbery charges after trying unsuccessfully to rob a Union Boulevard pizza shop two days before bolting from a neighborhood grocery store with soda and cigarettes, according to police.
Allentown police charged Leo J. Morales, of North Third Street, with single counts of robbery, conspiracy and theft in connection with two incidents last week in the city. District Judge Patricia Engler arraigned the 24-year-old Wednesday morning, setting bail at $75,000.
An employee of the Domino’s Pizza at 1826 Union Blvd. reported to police that a man entered the store about 12:45 a.m. Feb. 10 and demanded money from the register, according to court records. The robber allegedly told the employee that he was armed.
The employee said he couldn’t open the register, so the would-be bandit walked out and left with another man posted outside the store, according to records. Police said surveillance video shows the two men approaching the Domino’s together with the second man appearing to serve as a lookout.
Shortly before 8:30 p.m. Feb. 12, Morales walked into R&R Grocery and Deli at 448 N. Second St., grabbed two bottles of soda and a bag of chips and headed to the counter. There he asked for two boxes of cigarettes and two cigars, according to records.
An employee said Morales grabbed everything and ran out of the store. He told police that he recognized Morales as a customer and identified him. Authorities said the theft was caught on video surveillance.
Police the Domino’s employee later identified Morales through a photo lineup as the man who tried to rob the store.
Morales failed to post bail and was sent to Lehigh County Prison to await a preliminary hearing scheduled for Feb. 26.
