Big Y, Stop & Shop, Walmart and some of their competitors have reduced hours and some services over the weekend as high demand driven by coronavirus response emptied store shelves.

The stores said in various messages that they need more time to restock. Visits to locations in and around Springfield showed that toilet paper was out of stock — the result of a national panic-buying spree. Some meat cases were looking a bit thin. But milk, bread, butter and eggs looked to be in good supply.

Beginning Monday, March 16, Big Y World Class Market will adjust store hours. It will be open 7:30 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. until further notice. The new scheduled will give store teams time to conduct additional preventive sanitation and restock product on shelves.

Big Y offers home delivery through the third-party provider Instacart.

Also on Monday, Stop & Shop will open at 7:30 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. at most of its locations.

Stop & Shop also announced that it suspended online pickup service until further notice so store staff and can focus on cleaning and restocking. It warned of delays with its Peapod home delivery service.

Beginning Sunday, March 15, Walmart stores and Neighborhood Markets opened at 6 a.m. and will close at 11 p.m. until further notice. Stores currently operating under more reduced hours (for example, those that regularly close at 10 p.m. or open at 7 a.m.) will keep their current hours of operation, the company said.

Walmart also offers pickup services for online orders.

Market Basket said on its Facebook page that it expects to maintain its regular operating hours.

Geissler’s markets, including its location on Suffield Street in Agawam, have not changed hours. But the chain has cut the fee it charges for home delivery to $5 in an effort to serve customers who want to avoid crowds The stores also offer in-person pickup.
