Coronavirus: How to switch or cancel flights without an expensive fee - syracuse.com

SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- Airlines charge from $75 to $300 fees when travelers change or cancel flights, but many are waiving the fees in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.

President Trump has placed restrictions on air travel from China and Europe to limit the spread of COVID-19, the sometimes-deadly respiratory disease caused by the novel coronavirus. No restrictions have been placed on domestic travel, but health experts are urging people to think twice about traveling by air.

“Crowded travel settings, like airports, may increase your risk of exposure to COVID-19, if there are other travelers with COVID-19,” the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention warned on Wednesday.

Here’s a summary of the change fee policies of airlines serving Syracuse Hancock International Airport and how to change or cancel travel plans without incurring those fees:

Allegiant Air

Customers with reservations may request a one-time change to their travel plans without incurring change or cancel fees. To make changes to your reservation, contact the airline’s Customer Care Service Center at (702) 505-8888.

You may also contact the airline via email at Customer.Relations@allegiantair.com or its social media on Twitter @allegiant or Facebook @allegiant for assistance.

American Airlines

American is waiving change fees for customers who purchased tickets prior to March 1 for travel through April 30. The offer is available for any of American’s fares. Customers have until Dec. 31 to rebook travel for future flights.

Customers must pay any fare difference, if applicable, at time of ticketing of the new fare. The new ticket must be reissued on or before Dec. 31 or 12 months from the original ticket date (whichever is earlier). Travel must also commence on or before December 31 or one year from original issue date (again, whichever is sooner).

To change or cancel online:

Call to rebook

After you cancel your trip online, call Reservations at (800) 433-7300 when you’re ready to rebook. You’ll need:

  • Your ticket number (American tickets have a 13-digit number that begins with ’001’)
  • Your 6-character confirmation (also called a ‘Record Locator’)

Delta Air Lines

Delta will waive change fees for customers scheduled to travel between March 1 and April 30.

  • All tickets issued on or before March 9 for travel dates from March 1, 2020 – April 30, 2020.
  • New tickets must be re-issued on or before Dec. 31, 2020.
  • Rebooked travel must begin no later than Dec. 31, 2020.

To change your flight, visit My Trips on delta.com and click on “Modify Flight”.

  • Choose "Start Flight Change" and select which flight you would like to change to search for a new flight.
  • The change fee will display initially. However, once you select your new itinerary the change fee will be waived prior to checkout.
  • Note, a difference in fare may apply.

You may cancel your trip and use the value of the tickets towards a future flight up to one year from the original issue date. To cancel your flight, visit My Trips on delta.com and click on “Modify Flight” then choose “Start Flight Cancelation.”

Frontier Airlines

The airline is waiving change and cancellation fees:

  • For tickets issued prior to March 10, 2020 with original travel dates between March 10 and April 30, 2020, customers may make a one-time change to their itinerary without a change/cancel fee by contacting Frontier at (801) 401-9000.

Customers may rebook their flights for travel through Oct. 24, 2020 online in the Manage Trips section of jetblue.com or contact the airline at (800) 538-2583 prior to the departure time of their originally scheduled flight.

Original travel must have been booked on or before March 10, 2020. Fare differences will apply. For cancellations, funds will be issued as a JetBlue Travel Bank Credit, valid for one year from date of issuance.

United Airlines

If you’re scheduled to travel on United now through April 30, 2020 – domestically or internationally, to any destination – and would like to change your plans, there is no fee to do so, regardless of when you purchased your ticket.
