Walmart now limiting customers to roughly 20 percent of capacity during coronavirus crisis - MLive.com

MICHIGAN -- Walmart has joined other large retailers in announcing a move to limit the amount of customers in each store during the coronavirus crisis.

Beginning Saturday, April 4, stores will limit capacity to roughly 20 percent or five customers per 1,000 square feet of space.

Customers will be directed to go into the store through one entry point, usually the grocery side door, and will be counted. Once a store reaches capacity, customers will be then by admitted on a “1-out-1-in” basis.

Staff also plans to create one-way movement through aisles in several stores, with floor markers to direct customers.

The goal is to promote social distancing and keep customers from coming into close contact with each other.

“While many of our customers have been following the advice of the medical community regarding social distancing and safety, we have been concerned to still see some behaviors in our stores that put undue risk on our people. We want to encourage customers to bring the fewest number of people per family necessary to shop, allow for space with other customers while shopping, and practice social distancing while waiting in lines,” according to a Walmart statement.

Walmart also is starting to make masks and gloves available to workers who want them.

Target on Friday announced similar measures to limit customer numbers and also said employees would be provided masks and gloves.

CORONAVIRUS PREVENTION TIPS

In addition to washing hands regularly and not touching your face, officials recommend practicing social distancing, assuming anyone may be carrying the virus. Health officials say you should be staying at least 6 feet away from others and working from home, if possible. Carry hand sanitizer with you, and use disinfecting wipes or disinfecting spray cleaners on frequently-touched surfaces in your home ( door handles, faucets, countertops ) and when you go into places like stores.
