An employee at an Amazon facility in Edison has tested positive for coronavirus and is under quarantine, the company said.
Anyone who was in close contact with the employee was asked to stay home - with pay - for 14 days in self-quarantine, Amazon said
“We are supporting the individuals, following guidelines from local officials, and are taking extreme measures to ensure the safety of all the employees at our sites," Amazon said in a statement.
All employees diagnosed with coronavirus or placed in quarantine will receive up to two weeks of additional time off, to ensure they can get healthy without worrying about lost pay, the company said. Amazon is also offering all its hourly employees unlimited unpaid time off through April.
There are no plans to close the 923,000 square-foot Edison facility, located at a former Frigidaire plant.
The company said it has implemented a series of preventative health measures for employees including practicing social distancing within its facilities, requiring employees to stay home and seek medical attention if they are feeling unwell and more frequent and intense cleaning of all sites.
Employees at at least 10 Amazon warehouses around the country have tested positive for the coronavirus. The company is one of the major retailers that is hiring during the pandemic.
