Delta Air Lines and American Airlines have made face masks mandatory for all passengers and crew aboard the aircraft. They will provide them to passengers they do not have, and the new rules will take effect immediately.

Why are masks effective?
Face masks have proven to be a useful tool to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The primary benefit is that those who have the virus are much less likely to spread it if they have a mask. Many of these passengers are asymptomatic and show no symptoms. As the virus spreads through the breath and saliva particles, the mask acts as a physical barrier and prevents the spread of the infection.

New CDC rules in the US suggest that if passengers cannot be more than six feet apart, they should wear a face mask. Because the plane is so narrow and limited that it’s almost impossible (we would argue that even those in the first class, less than six feet apart, will need to wear face masks on board.
Following these recommendations, American Airlines and Delta Air Lines have made wearing a face mask mandatory.

What are the new rules in Delta and American?
US airlines have already issued a rule that all its crew must wear a face mask all the time. Now, the same rule will apply to all passengers from May 1, 2020 (except for very young children and those who cannot carry it on medical grounds – this is ironic!).
“The American Airlines team continues to prioritize the safety of our customers and team members, and the requirement of personal coverage is another way we can protect those on our aircraft,” said Kurt Station, senior vice president of customer experience at press release. “We ask customers to bring their own face masks or overlays with which they are comfortable while traveling. An American is working on purchasing a face mask and hand sanitizer as an accessory.”

Delta Air Lines complies with similar passenger and crew protection rules. Not only do they require all passengers and crew to wear masks, but they will also check the temperature of the crew members before each flight.
“Nothing is more important than the health and safety of our people and our customers,” said Bill Lensch, Chief Customer Experience Officer in a press release. “While we remain committed to our new standard of cleanliness and to provide more space for our customers as they drive, we are serious about CDC guidelines for adding this extra layer of protection. We believe this change will give customers and the staff some extra comfort while traveling with us. ”
Both airlines will also distribute hand sanitizers and other disinfectants to keep passengers safe.
The future of face masks on airplanes
There is nothing more permanent than a temporary solution. If these masks are effective not only in controlling the spread of COVID-19 on board, but also with other viruses, they can stay here.
In Asia, face masks are considered a necessary remedy for those who are ill, and seeing them on people (outside the hospital) is commonplace. Now in the west, we can see the same shifts in usage, and airlines may not relax these new rules any time soon.
