Stuck in 'pending purgatory'? Labor Dept. to provide more unemployment claim details - Democrat & Chronicle

If you’re trying to claim unemployment in New York, one of your biggest questions is probably “where am I in the process?”

New Yorkers have complained that their claims are stuck in so-called “pending purgatory,” in which the inner workings of their claim and when it might be processed are a mystery.

Some claims were marked “pending” for weeks, even as the claimant wasn’t working and couldn’t pay his or her bills.

On Friday, the Department of Labor announced the launch of a new effort, expected next week, that will break down in further detail the process of an unemployment claim.

This will allow a claimant to better understand what step they’re on, what action might be needed and what’s coming next, said Commissioner Roberta Reardon.

“The system we have sees applications in binary terms — an application is pending until it’s processed,” Reardon said.

Now claimants will be notified by the department via email or text message when their claim moves forward, using more detailed steps and language, she said.

This system will be available to both current and future applicants.

“Information is power. When you at least know what step you are on and what comes next, you can better plan for the days ahead,” Reardon said.

Earlier this week, the department emailed 90,000 claimants with complete claims who had not yet certified for benefits, and launched an online system to allow people to certify for prior weeks they may have missed, an action that typically can only be completed over the phone.

As of Friday, $6.8 billion has been allocated to New Yorkers through the unemployment system in the past two months.

Approximately 33 million people have filed for unemployment in the U.S. since the beginning of the coronavirus crisis, and the national unemployment rate stands at 14.7%, the highest since the Great Depression, the U.S. Department of Labor announced Friday.
