The Cleveland Browns should put claims in on these five waived players
Saturday was cut down day in the NFL, which is a sad but important day on the league calendar. The Cleveland Browns and the other 31 teams had to trim their rosters down to 53 which meant hundreds of players were told of their release.
The good news is, their journey might not be over. Many of these players could land back on their respective club’s practice squad or be picked up on waivers by another team completely.
This fact was pointed out by new Washington team president Jason Wright, who was with the Browns from 2005-2008. Wright pointed to the fact that he was cut eight times in his career so he understands how these players are feeling but is a reminder that there can be better times ahead for these guys.
For Cleveland, they made some tough calls on Saturday — some of which were really shocking. The biggest might have been their decision to move on from Chad Thomas, a 2018 third-round pick.
Thomas was brought in by former general manager John Dorsey but didn’t survive through new GM Andrew Berry’s first offseason. He was joined by another Dorsey pick in Damion Ratley, a sixth-round receiver from Texas A&M also taken in 2018.
There were a couple of other camp standouts released as Oklahoma State cornerback A.J. Green was let go despite being given a big signing bonus and Donovan Olumba was waived despite having reps with the first team recently at corner.
Many of these players could return to the practice squad, as long as they are not claimed by other teams. However, other clubs have also made similar decisions which could lead to Cleveland making a few claims of their own.
With that being said, we look across the NFL and identify five players the Browns should put in a claim for.
