GREENWOOD, Ind. - The UIndy tennis programs began their seasons on the right foot this weekend, completing the ITA Midwest Regional on Monday with three titles and a runner-up in the men's singles draw.

QUICK HITS

  • Nikol Alekseeva dropped just 11 sets on her way to collecting her second straight ITA regional singles title
  • Anna Novikova, along with Alekseeva, topped the doubles side for the second time in the past three seasons, defeating UIndy teammates Alina Kislitskaya and Sofia Sharonova
  • On the men's side, Agustin Gascia and Renato Lima cruised to a doubles crown, defeating the duo from Illinois Springfield, 8-2
  • Lima nearly matched Alekseeva's effort, but fell short in the men's singles draw to Findlay sophomore Soh Kuyama

HOUND BYTES
Head coach Malik Tabet: "It was great to get back into competition this weekend. We were very successful, had fun, and most importantly were able to follow the COVID-19 protocols that were put in place in order to keep us safe. We were lucky to play, as we were just one of only three regionals in action for this ITA event."

MONDAY
After battling in an all-Greyhound finale on Sunday for the women's doubles win, four UIndy players lined up for the singles semifinals at Center Grove High School. Alekseeva, who ultimately became the seventh straight UIndy women's player to earn the ITA Midwest singles plaque, knocked out newcomer Sahra Bouchaala before defeating Kislitskaya in the final. Kislitskaya, who herself made a second straight appearance in the singles title match, earned a semifinal victory over Novikova in tie-breaking fashion.

It was another busy day for Lima on Monday, as he and Gascia won the men's doubles title before advancing through his teammate on the singles side to advance to the final against the Oiler Kuyama. Lima was part of the regional champions for doubles a season ago, with Gascia joining the senior in 2020.

SUNDAY
Three of the four semifinal spots were owned by UIndy tandems on Sunday, with Alekseeva and Novikova topping fellow Hounds Kislitskaya and Sharonova for the win. Before advancing to the final, Kislitskaya and Sharonova handled teammates Maria Solnyshkina and Ana Valiaeva by the score of 8-2. Meanwhile, Alekseeva and Novikova took care of their own business on the flip side of the bracket, knocking out the Hillsdale duo of Cimpeanu and Hackman.

The men also secured four of the eight spots in the singles bracket for Sunday's competition, with two advancing to the semifinals for Monday action. Gascia continued his dominance of G-MAC competitors, sweeping away his second Hillsdale foe of the tournament to move to the semifinal with Lima, who knocked out Walsh's Jakob Riglewski in straight sets. The Hounds did not replicate that success on the bottom portion of the bracket, however, as Nikolaj Talimaa and Yoann Viel each dropped their respective quarterfinal match.

Just like the women's side, the UIndy men advanced three doubles squads to the semifinals. Gascia and Lima defeated teammates Jason Gerweck and Maximilian Witthaus, 8-4, while Viel and Tom Zeuch were eliminated by the Martinez-Servaes duo from UIS.

SATURDAY
UIndy dominated the bracket from first serve on Saturday to succesfully kick off the fall campaign. Just two Hounds suffered losses in opening round singles action, with 13 players between the men's and women's side advanced to the third round of their respective bracket. Cristian Morales and Talimaa werre the lone UIndy doubles squad not to advance to Sunday, but earned a win in the first round against Hillsdale.
