MONMOUTH, Ore. – It was a strong start to the home schedule for the Western Oregon University cross country teams on Friday. Hosting the annual Ash Creek Invitational, Luz Garcia and Keanu Daos each led the way crossing in first to help lead the Wolves to a pair of second-place team results.
Overall, WOU finished second out of seven teams in the women's 4k race with 58 points as George Fox won the invite with 29 points.
Garcia crossed with a time of 13:59.3 to claim the title. She ran an average mile time of 5:37.1. Caitlin Heldt gave the Wolves a strong 1-2 finish as she came in runner-up with a time of 14:08.7. She ran an average mile time of 5:40.8.
Katie Chapman and Lindie Larson were the next two in for the Wolves as they finished just a few spots apart. Chapman crossed in 28th with a time of 15:36.6 and Larson came in 31st with a time of 15:55.2. Josie Ackerman came in 37th with a time of 16:03.4. Emily Moore was right behind in 39th with a time of 16:08.0. Kaitlyn Kruse was close as well to that pack as she crossed at 16:11.5 to come in 44th. Rounding out the results for the Wolves was Shannon Smith who came in 64th.
In the men's 6k race, the Wolves tallied 63 points to come in second out of 10 teams. George Fox also claimed the men's team title with 36 points.
Daos, just like Garcia, put together a strong first cross country race as a member of the Wolves when he won with a time of 18:22.1. He finished over 16 seconds ahead of the field. He had a 4:55.5 average mile time. Former WOU cross country great and current track and field student-athlete Justin Crosswhite ran unattached coming in second.
Timothy Rambo put together a strong first race as well with WOU as he was close to a top-five finish before placing seventh with a time of 19:02.6. He put together an average mile time of 5:06.3. Easton Pomrankey collected a solid 14th-place finish in his first race with a time of 19:18.1. He posted an average mile time of 5:10.5.
Cedar Davis-Frankfort nearly gave the Wolves four in the top-25 when he came in 26th with a time of 19:35.0. Bryce Mefford was the fifth one in for the Wolves as he was just a few spots back of Davis-Frankfort crossing in 29th with a time of 19:38.2. Keeton Sanchez wasn't far behind as he crossed in 35th with a time of 19:57.3.
Jaden McCabe opened his Wolves' career coming in 41st with a time of 20:10.7. Rounding out the results for the Wolves was Wyatt Smith coming in 51st, Talon Aguilar in 60th and Chase Eckenfels in 67th.
WOU will now get set to once again host another meet, this one on Friday, Sep. 24 for the Mike Johnson Classic that will start at 5 p.m.
