WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Led by Cooper Schultz, who captured his first career top-10 finish, the Kansas State men's golf team placed sixth at the Old Town Club Collegiate Invitational as play concluded on Tuesday.
K-State carded a 5-under par 275 round three to finish off its performance at the par-70, 6,966-yard course. The Wildcats' 54-hole total of 15-under 825 was just one stroke shy of a top-five finish.
"We made a lot of birdies, and we had a couple of guys who, even though they weren't playing their best, showed a lot of fight and were able to grind out some solid rounds," head coach Grant Robbins said.
Schultz, a redshirt freshman, had his breakout performance that the Cats have been expecting. The Wichita, Kansas product recorded a 2-under par 68 during the final 18 holes to clinch a tie for seventh place at 7-under par 203. Schultz is yet another example of a different Wildcat stepping up, proving the vertsaliting of K-State's five-man lineup.
The two upperclassman leaders for Kansas State, Tim Tillmanns and Will Hopkins, both had huge days to finish in a tie for 19th place at 3-under par 207.
Tillmanns, a junior, was able to jump 10 spots on the leaderboard on Tuesday as he repeated his impressive round two score with another 2-under par 68 during the final round. Tillmanns' performance earned him his seventh-career top-20 finish and second straight to start the 2021-22 season.
Hopkins, the lone senior for the Wildcats, was able to put together his third-straight score of 1-under par 69. His consistent play throughout the two days also earned him his seventh-career top-20 finish.
Luke O'Neill had another promising showing as the sophomore shot an even-par 70 in round three to bring his total score to 2-under par 208, good for a tie in 26th place.
Another sophomore, Ethan Miller, was able to make up some ground with a 1-over par 71 in the third round, rising seven spots on the leaderboard to tie for 62nd.
Wake Forest, the host of the Old Town Collegiate, was able to calmly complete its victory by 14 strokes with a final tally of 35-under par 805. Two Demon Decans, Alex Fitzpatrick and Michael Brennan, carded scores of 12-under par 198 to share the individual crown.
With now two positive performances through two outings, Kansas State has momentum as the Wildcats turn the corner in their fall schedule. K-State will look to continue its hot streak when the Cats travel to Sugar Grove, Illinois, to compete in the Rich Harvest Farms Intercollegiate this Saturday through Monday.
"There is definitely lots to build on as we prepare for Rich Harvest Farms this weekend," Robbins said.
Ranked in the top 100 golf courses in the U.S. according to Golf Digest, the par-72, 7,715-yard Rich Harvest Farms recently played host to the 2021 Arnold Palmer Cup. The event, hosted by Northern Illinois, will be another great test for a rising Wildcat squad.
