On Saturday afternoon, the Knights locked up the trophy, which goes to the top team in Greater Grand Forks annually, by scoring two third-period goals 80 seconds apart to beat Grand Forks Red River 4-3 at Purpur Arena.

"They played a physical game, and we rose to the occasion," Central junior forward Dom Gerszewski said.

The Knights, who beat Red River 4-1 in the season opener, improved to 10-1, while Red River dropped to 9-3.

"We told the guys we just have to play through it," Central coach Grant Paranica said of the message after the second period. "We were having a little trouble and getting a little frustrated. We needed to bear down."

Red River took a 3-1 lead at 11:17 of the second period when Drew Melland tapped in a 2-on-1 feed from Morgan Hoefs.

The Knights would get one goal back before the second intermission when Gerszewski tapped in a pass from Hunter Anderson at 13:01 of the second to trim the deficit to 3-2.

Gerszewski, who now has eight goals on the season, evened the game at 2:29 of the third period. He scored just as a Red River penalty expired.

The Knights took the lead at 3:49 of the third period when Joey Kennelly scored off a faceoff play. Kennelly now has a state-leading 16 goals on the year. Chase Spicer scored in the first period to push his state-leading point total to 31.

Red River, which also received goals from Carter Sproule and Zach Hinschberger, pulled its goalie in the final minute but couldn't generate a strong chance late.

"We talked before the game that it'll be all the little things that win the game," Red River coach Tim Skarperud said. "We just didn't execute, so we'll get better from it and learn from it. We knew it was going to be a battle for three periods. They took advantage of a couple of opportunities, and hopefully, we'll see them again down the road.

"For the most part, I'm happy with how we played but championship teams are going to have to play for 51 minutes, not 45 or 40."
