Omaha, Neb. -- Senior Jonah Smith delivered a complete-game eight inning shutout win over Villanova as Creighton run-ruled the Wildcats in eight innings, 10-0, on Saturday, April 10.
The win moved the Bluejays to 8-7 on the season and 2-0 in the BIG EAST Conference, while Villanova fell to 12-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.
While Smith was dominant on the mound, freshman Alan Roden was equally impressive at the dish, going 3-for-4 with 7 RBI.
Creighton claimed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first beyond a two-out single from sophomore Sterling Hayes and an RBI single by Roden.
The Bluejays plated four runs in the third on five hits. Junior David Webel opened the frame with a bunt single to third. Sophomore Andrew Meggs blooped a single to left, then Hayes moved both runners 90 feet with a sacrifice. Roden took advantage with a two-run double into right field. After a meeting on the mound, senior Ryan Mantle blasted a two-run home run to right to make it 5-0.
Smith surrendered his first Wildcat hit of the game in the fourth, but a 6-4-3 double play ended the inning.
Creighton's offense went back to work in the seventh, converting once more with two outs. Meggs got things going with a double down the left field line, then Hayes was hit by a pitch. Bringing Roden back to the dish. After working the count full the Wisconsin native connected on his fourth home run of the season. Mantle followed with his second blast of the day, giving the Bluejays a 9-0 edge.
Villanova put the first two runners on in the top of the eighth, getting a single from Ryan Toohers and a double by Pat O'Neil. Creighton head coach Ed Servais went to the mound for a brief chat, but left Smith in the game. His hurler responded by setting three consecutive Wildcat pinch-hitters down on strikes.
The bottom half of the eighth saw Creighton end the contest with a run on three walks and a hit batter. Fittingly it was Roden who closed the game with a walk to force in the tenth run of the game.
Roden and Mantle combined to go 5-for-8 with 10 RBI and four runs scored.
Smith claimed the win (2-2), limiting Villanova to three hits while striking out eight, he faced just 26 batters in the contest (two over the minimum).
Villanova starter Jimmy Kingsbury took the loss (4-2), allowing five runs on eight hits in six innings of work.
Creighton and Villanova complete their three-game series on Sunday, April 11 at 12:00 pm.
