LEWISBURG, Pa. – Behind a pair of outstanding pitching performances from junior Gabriella Nori and freshman Katelyn Young, the Lehigh softball team swept a doubleheader from Bucknell Sunday at Becker Field, claiming a 3-1 victory in the weekend home-and-home series in the process.
Nori fired a five-hitter with a pair of third inning runs the difference in a 2-0 victory in game one, while Young tossed a three-hitter for her first career shutout as the Mountain Hawks rode a seven-run fifth inning to a 10-0 victory.
Senior Payton Alsobrooks had five hits to lead the offense, including a 4-for-4 showing in game two. Sophomore Emily Cimino was 3-for-7 in the doubleheader with two doubles and three runs batted in.
Lehigh improves to 10-14 overall, while Bucknell is now 11-12. Both teams are 8-8 in Patriot League play.
The shutouts were the second and third of the season for the Mountain Hawks. Nori and Young combined to shut out Holy Cross on April 9.
On Sunday, Nori scattered five hits while walking two and striking out two to improve to 5-5 on the season.
The only offense in game one came in the top of the third when Alsobrooks led off with a double to right center, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a Cimino single to left. Two batters later, freshman Brooke Cannon singled home Cimino to put the Mountain Hawks up 2-0.
Nori took care of the rest, working out of jams in the sixth and seventh to preserve the victory.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Young and Bucknell's Kaiya Burton through four innings. Alsobrooks was the catalyst again, leading off with a triple to right. Cimino doubled Alsobrooks home with the game's first run and then scored on a double by junior Jaelynn Chesson.
Lehigh added three more runs on a wild pitch, an error and a sacrifice bunt to go up 5-0, before back-to-back RBI doubles by junior Addie Kittel and Alsobrooks capped the seven-run explosion.
Alsobrooks' fourth hit of game two brought home freshman Amanda Greaney in the seventh and Cimino capped the scoring with a two-run double.
Young allowed just three hits in the best performance of her career thus far. She allowed a one out single to Chase Knapp in the first inning, a one out double to Jazmyn Stokes in the second and a two out single to Sarah Baluch in the fourth. She struck out four and did not walk a batter as she improves to 5-7 on the season.
Chesson went 3-for-5 with two more doubles in game two, giving her 13 doubles on the season.
Lehigh is scheduled to host Lafayette in a single game Thursday at 4 p.m. before stepping out of league play to host Princeton in a doubleheader Saturday at 12:30 p.m.
