ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Beautiful weather and a strong field of teams at a track usually equates to good marks.
Such was the case Friday night at Red Devil Stadium as the annual Dave Porterfield Invitational was held with a strong 22-school field taking part.
Steubenville made it a clean sweep of the team titles. Big Red’s boys team scored 85 points, which was 11.5 better than runner-up Meadowbrook. The Big Red girls, meanwhile, posted 101 points, which a half point better than John Glenn.
BOYS
Steubenville picked up a victory in the long jump when senior Nasari Jackson marked the sand at 20-ft-2 3/4 for the title.
Big Red won the 200 meter dash thanks to junior Brenten Jones posting a solid 23.47 effort.
Sophomore Micah Mitchell was the champion in the 300 intermediate hurdles in a time of 42.35.
Union Local’s boys, which had won two earlier invitationals this spring, settled for third.
Senior Liam Vinskovich continued his brilliant early season in the high jump, clearing the bar at 6-feet for the gold medal.
The Jets team of Zach Bateman, Shawn Coe, Kaleb Farmer and Vinskovich used a furious kick in the final stretch to edge Steubenville Catholic for the title by 31 hundredths of a second. The Jets clocked a 3:37.55.
The host Red Devils team of Ian Dagan, Colin Oberdick, Nathaniel Ellison and Austin DaRe teamed up to run a 1:33.41 for the 4×2 title.
Bellaire junior Colt Sechrest proved that the St. C. Discus ring is one of his favorites. Just three days removed from setting a new Red Devil Stadium record, he re-wrote the record book once again. His platter hit 177-ft-6 inches away from the circle for the victory and both the meet and stadium record. His throw was nine better than his mark from earlier in the week and almost 12 feet further than the previous meet record, which had stood since 2014.
A short-time later, Sechrest shifted to the shot put ring where he launched the iron ball to a mark of 49-ft-5 for the victory.
The Big Reds won on the track, too. Talented freshman Mayson Sochor won the 110 high hurdles in 16.16.
Martins Ferry’s Francis Toohey gave the Purple Riders an individual winner. He circled the track twice in 2:06.18 to win the 800 by more than five seconds.
The Riders distance team of Elijah Smith, Trent Lewis, C.J. Anderson and Toohey ran an 8:40.88 to win the 4×800.
GIRLS
Steubenville’s girls were fueled by a dazzling double victory from freshman standout Sabria Jones.
The talented speedster got things going by winning the long jump with an impressive mark of 17-1. She later came back to win the 200 meter dash in a meet-record time of 26.11.
Junior Isabella Yetts won the 400 in 61.87 for Big Red.
Steubenville’s 4×2 team of Mya Steakhouse, Madison Beadling, Madalyn Criss and Jones ran a 1:49.10 to win the 4×2.
Junior Amya Livingston was once again impressive in the shot put. She launched the iron ball to a mark. Of 42-10.
The host Red Devils, who finished third in the team race with 80.33 points, picked up their first win in the pole vault thanks to junior All-Ohioan Emily Thompson. She soared over 11-9 to win her specialty by nearly two feet.
The Red Devils got their first win on the track thanks to junior speedster Casadie DiBetta. The multiple-time swimming All-Ohioan showed her speed outside of the water when she ran 12.90 to win a nip-and-tuck 100-meter dash that saw the top three competitors separated by just six-hundredths of a second.
The St. C. 4×1 team of Madie Stock, DiBetta, Thompson and Emma Henry posted a 52.05 to win the lap relay.
Harrison Central had a strong showing.
Senior Jasmine Arnold got things going with a victory in the 3200 meter run. She ran eight laps in 12:05.96.
A while later, she returned to the track, ran six fewer laps and won the 800 in a time of 2:33.91. In between, she settled for second in the 1600, giving her 28 points in the meet.
Senior Thea Haney continued her strong season in the discus. She twirled the platter to a mark of 116-ft-10 and the title.
Steubenville Central’s Clara Symington was a double winner in the hurdles. She won the highs in 16.09 and then cleared eight hurdles in 50.11 to win the lows.
Steubenville Central’s team of Symington, Elizabeth Ivan, Kathryn Bolster and Rebecca Bolster turned in a solid 4:23.15 for the 4×4 title.
Barnesville picked up a victory in the 1600 meter run thanks to Marah Bethel. She posted an impressive 5:35.78 to win.
