Figueredo's Blast, Woodward's Relief Helps Baseball Claim 7-5 Win Over JU - FGCU Athletics

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. --- Behind a strong relief appearance from Jason Woodward and four home runs on offense, including a deep blast from Alejandro Figueredo in the ninth inning that gave the Eagles the lead, the FGCU baseball team (25-17, 11-6 ASUN) prevailed 7-5 over Jacksonville on Saturday at John Sessions Field.

With the victory, the Green and Blue remain tied for first place in the ASUN South Division standings with North Florida, who defeated Stetson on Saturday to clinch their weekend series. FGCU also secured at least a home divisional round series in the conference tournament and can claim the No. 1 seed with a win over the Dolphins in Sunday's series finale at noon.

"That was a big win for us tonight," FGCU head coach Dave Tollett said. "Woodward came through for us and was able to finish it off. We found a way to win, and we'll look to win the series Sunday."

Despite striking out 16 times - one shy of their season-high - FGCU took JU pitchers deep four times with Figueredo, Richie Garcia, Joe Kinker and Ian Farrow producing them. Brian Ellis and Johnny Long each added a double apiece as six of the 11 hits for the Eagles were of the extra-base variety.

Garcia (Davie, Fla./West Broward HS) slammed an 0-1 pitch over the left field wall in the third inning to give the Eagles a 2-0 lead. It was his fourth homer of the season and the 24th of his career. Long (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS), who had singled to lead off the inning, scored on the play. One batter later, Kinker (North Port, Fla./Venice HS) made it back-to-back home runs with his 12th of the season, which came on a 3-2 pitch.

With his homer, Garcia ties Jason Louwsma (24, 2005-06) for the fourth-most home runs in program history.

Jacksonville, meanwhile, scored single runs in the third and fifth innings to trim their deficit to one. In the top of the sixth, Farrow (Merritt Island, Fla./Merritt Island HS) hit the third home run of his rookie campaign, which left the yard in deep center on the first pitch he saw, to double the lead at 4-2.

However, in the sixth, the Dolphins put runners on second and third with no outs against FGCU starter, Tyler Tipton. Head coach Dave Tollett went to the bullpen for Tyler Shuck (Cape Coral, Fla./Canterbury HS), who allowed a walk and a game-tying, two-run single. Another call to the 'pen went to Woodward, who produced a pair of strikeouts and a flyout to prevent any further damage and keep the game tied.

In fact, Woodward would retire the first nine batters he faced as the game remained tied entering the ninth. On a 2-2 count, Figueredo (Sucre, Venezuela/West Oaks HS/Seminole State) hit a no-doubter to left while leading off the top half of the inning. After a Cameron Krzeminski (Coral Springs, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) single and a wild pitch, Long knocked him in with a double to right to push the margin to 6-4. Another run then came across on an RBI double from Ellis (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) on a line drive down the right field line.

Those extra runs came in handy in the home half as Jacksonville pushed a run across against Woodward, who ultimately ended the game with a bases loaded strikeout.

Woodward (Titusville, Fla./Titusville HS) improved to 2-2 overall this year while lowering his ERA to 3.86. Of the 16 batters he faced over four innings, he allowed just three hits, one run and zero walks while striking out six. The run he gave up in the ninth inning ended his scoreless streak at 11.1 innings, which spanned seven appearances and dated back to March 28.

Tipton (Tampa, Fla./Gaither HS/South Florida State) allowed eight hits, four runs and zero walks over five-plus innings to pick up the no decision.

Ellis (3-for-4, RBI, BB, 2B) led the offense as he produced his fifth game with at least three hits this year, finishing just one hit shy of his season-high, which he set against JU on April 9. Long (2-for-3, 2 R, RBI, BB, 2B) also produced a multi-hit effort, which was his 12th of the season, and led the team with two runs scored as five others scored once apiece.

With his homer, Kinker extended his hitting streak to eight straight. He has also reached base in a team-best 17 straight, while Farrow extended his on-base streak to 14. FGCU's four home runs fell one shy of matching their season-high of five set against FAU on March 30.

On The Line
With a win on Sunday, the Eagles can claim the No. 1 seed in the ASUN divisional round series, which would mean a matchup against Jacksonville. Should UNF win and FGCU lose, the Ospreys would claim the top seed and a matchup with Jacksonville. Stetson is locked into the No. 3 seed and will face whoever claims the second seed. The semifinals and championship will be hosted in Jacksonville, Fla. May 27-29.
