STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The No. 19-ranked University of Michigan softball team scored runs in each of the opening three innings and withstood a late rally to defeat Penn State, 5-3, and complete the four-game series sweep on Sunday afternoon (May 2) at the Nittany Lions' Beard Field.
The Wolverines scored three runs in the first inning, highlighted by junior center fielder Lexie Blair's leadoff triple -- she scored on a subsequent throwing error -- and senior first baseman Lou Allan's two-run homer to left field. U-M posted all three runs before Penn State (5-26, 5-26 Big Ten) recorded its first out. Allan's homer, which she clanged off the Beard Field scoreboard, was her eighth of the season -- tied for the team lead.
Michigan (27-5, 27-5 Big Ten) added a run apiece in the second and third frames. Sophomore second baseman Julia Jimenez doubled and scored in the former frame, while freshman left fielder Sierra Kersten drew a bases-loaded walk on five pitches to earn the easy RBI in the latter.
Michigan's bats went cold for the final four frames, as PSU chipped away at its lead -- first with a solo homer in the fifth then two runs off two hits and a hit-by-pitch in the sixth.
Junior RHP Alex Storako (17-2) struck out nine through five innings but was replaced by senior RHP Meghan Beaubien with two in scoring position and no outs in the bottom of the sixth. Beaubien worked out the jam then struck out the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure her third save of the season.
Michigan will travel to East Lansing, Mich., to face in-state rival Michigan State at 5 p.m. on Wednesday (May 5) at Secchia Stadium. It is the second of two rescheduled games against the Spartans. It will be streamed live on Big Ten Network+.
