Did Major League Baseball really tell the Red Sox to stop testing its players in the middle of the COVID-19 outbreak? Outfielder Hunter Renfroe said so, but that might be a misleading accusation.
Renfroe suggested in a radio interview on Thursday that the league told Boston to stop testing in order to stop finding positive cases.
"MLB basically told us to stop testing and just treat the symptoms," Renfroe said in an interview with WEEI. "We were like, 'No, we're going to figure out what’s going (on) and keep trying to keep this thing under control.'"
After a follow-up question clarifying whether the league asked the team to stop testing, Renfroe confirmed, "Yes."
Based on various conversations with league and team sources, both league and team officials seem to think Renfroe might have misinterpreted or misunderstood the situation.
One league source called the comments "highly inaccurate," and multiple team sources were confused by Renfroe's version of events.
Vaccinated players typically are not tested every day unless symptomatic, but the Red Sox have been testing extensively since a COVID-19 outbreak that started last Friday. Nine Red Sox players and two coaches have tested positive for the virus and three more (two players and a coach) have been quarantined as close contacts. A league official said MLB has conducted 1,884 COVID-19 tests on Red Sox personnel in the past two weeks.
"We have been following MLB's COVID-19 protocols all season long," the Red Sox said in a released statement. "We have consulted closely with them on everything we've done and continue to test and their medical staff has been very supportive."
