Vols Sweep Doubles, Claim Six Singles Wins on Day Two of Knoxville Showdown - University of Tennessee Athletics

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee men's tennis team had a strong day two at the Knoxville Showdown Saturday, sweeping its three doubles matches and claiming victory in six of eight singles matches.

For the Vols' first of three doubles wins, sophomore Johannus Monday and freshman Conor Gannon quickly dispatched of Columbia's Roko Horvat and Henry Ruger, 6-0 on court three, to open the proceedings.
 
The Vols' No. 48 pairing of Emile Hudd and Shunsuke Mitsui earned their second doubles win as a Tennessee duo, taking down Columbia's Alex Kotzen and Hugo Hashimoto on court one, 6-2.
 
Doubles play concluded for the Big Orange with graduate student Mark Wallner and junior Angel Diaz earning the Vols a third doubles victory, their second win as a pair in as many days, taking a 6-4 decision over Jayden Templeman and Theo Winegar of Columbia on court two to wrap up the doubles sweep for UT.
 
The Vols rebounded from Friday's action in a big way once singles play began, as sixth-ranked Monday defeated No. 110 Alex Kotzen of Columbia 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-5.
 
On court two, Mitsui took down Columbia's Horvat, 7-6 (5), 6-1, and court three saw No. 95 Hudd claim victory over Hugo Hashimoto of Columbia, 6-4, 6-2. Hudd remains perfect in doubles (2-0) and singles (2-0) through four total matches
 
Wallner trounced Columbia's Theo Winegar, 6-3, 6-3, while Diaz overcame Columbia's Henry Ruger, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
 
Gannon dropped his first of two singles matches Saturday, falling to Columbia's Austen Huang, 2-6, 6-2, 4-6.
 
In the afternoon, Diaz and Gannon each played an additional singles match, which included a 10-point super tiebreaker.
 
Diaz dropped that match to Jayden Templeman of Columbia, 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (8-10). Meanwhile, Gannon's afternoon consisted of a 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 1-0 (11-9) win over Columbia's Ben Gollin.
 
The third and final day of the Knoxville Showdown is set for Sunday, with doubles action between Pepperdine and Columbia set to begin at 10 a.m ET.
 
Tennessee will compete in four singles matches Sunday, beginning at the conclusion of Pepperdine and Columbia's outdoor doubles matches. Mitsui, Wallner, Diaz and Gannon will each compete in singles matches inside of Goodfriend Tennis Center.
 
Face coverings are required for spectators viewing Sunday's four indoor singles matches.
