The girls stole the show when it came time for the Staten Island Athletic Club to pick its 2020 scholarship winners.
In a Zoom meeting last week, the SIAC board announced that Lia Smerina of Tottenville High School, Elaine Li of Staten Island Tech and Lydia Zheng of the CSI High School for International Studies were the winners.
The award combines athletic achievement, academics and community service. In order to be considered for the SIAC Scholarship Award, students had to apply at statenislandac.org.
The awards are usually presented each year at the Staten Island Outdoor Track and Field championship meet in June, but due to the pandemic this year’s awards were presented via a live Zoom meeting.
“These three amazing girls have exhibited commitment and dedication to the sport of running, were invaluable to their coaches, and a source of inspiration and leadership for their teammates,” said SIAC president David Panza. “Also, the girls were very involved in service at their respective schools as well as their community at large.”
Smerina, a Huguenot resident, is studying public health at Nova Southeastern University in Florida.
“I am truly honored to represent SIAC,” she said. “Thank you for recognizing me as a student athlete!”
Li, a resident of Brooklyn, will attend Macaulay Honors College at Brooklyn College, where she plans on studying communication sciences and disorder for a path in speech pathology.
“Track and field and cross country has been instrumental to my high school experience,” she said. “The sport itself has inspired and challenged me countless times. It’s shown me what real mental and physical strength is needed just to keep running. I’ve met so many people and have been a part of so many cool things, so I’m thankful to Coach (Patricia) Mulligan and my team for being a part of my four years at Tech.”
Zheng, who resides in Port Richmond, will study business at the University of Notre Dame.
“I’m very appreciative for this award because it helps define the person that I am and the person that I have become, thanks to my coaches, teammates, friends and family,” she said.
To date, $64,000 has been awarded to high school seniors since the award’s inception in 2003, according to the SIAC. Members of the Staten Island Athletic Club raise funds by holding a Scholarship 5k Race in the fall and selling raffle tickets and gift baskets.
