The Minnesota Department of Health Friday, June 19, reported the death of an 11th Crow Wing County resident due to COVID-19.
The person who died was a man in his 80s and the death was reported Wednesday, a Crow Wing County news release reported.
There were no new cases reported in Crow Wing Friday, although nearby Mille Lacs County added one new laboratory-confirmed case and Todd County’s cases increased by five to 386. Aitkin, Cass, Morrison and Wadena counties reported no new cases this week. Wadena has not reported a new case in the month of June.
For the first time in its weekly COVID-19 report, the health department Thursday included data on laboratory test rates and positivity rates by county of residence. As of that date, Todd County — which surpassed other area counties in early May in terms of case numbers — led the way in both test and positivity rates. A total of 2,669 tests had been conducted there through Thursday, which equals 108.55 tests per 1,000 people and a positive rate of 15.3%.
Just 10 other counties in the state reported positivity rates in the double digits. Some of those — such as Nobles and Mower — are the sites of outbreaks at meat processing facilities. Nearly three-quarters of Todd’s cases trace their origins to three packing plants in the county.
Wadena County was second among area counties in the rate of testing — 66.87 per 1,000 — although it was seventh of seven when it came to positivity rate at 0.8%. Crow Wing registered 60.12 tests per 1,000 and a positivity rate of 2.6%. Morrison has conducted fewer tests per capita than Crow Wing, but has a higher positivity rate — 51.16 test per 1,000 residents and 3.7% positive.
As of Monday, the seven-day rolling average of the test positivity rate statewide was 3.5%, the health department reported in its briefing.
