Medicare enrollment help available through CLAIM - Fulton Sun

Medicare open enrollment began Thursday.

This means it is time for people 65 and over to review their coverage — CLAIM, a nonprofit based out of Columbia, is here to help.

In the past, CLAIM has held events at the Callaway County Public Library, bringing in counselors to help people find their best options. This year, that wasn't an option.

"With the pandemic going around and everything, our beneficiaries are in that age group that they're more susceptible," regional liaison Cindy Carr said.

CLAIM is still available over the phone to help compare and enroll in Medicare plans. Those eligible for Medicare have until Dec. 7 to enroll.

The group can help answer questions — "anything that has to do with Medicare Prescription Drug plans and Medicare Advantage plans," Carr said. "Every year, the plans change."

Medicare Advantage plans off alternative ways to receive benefits through private insurance. There are 20 prescription drug plans, or Part D plans.

The best plan depends on individual circumstances.

Those looking for advice can call 800-390-3330 to be referred to a counselor.

"That councilor will give them a call back — usually in one to three business days," Carr said.

Carr said some plans are less expensive while offering more coverage.

"Not only can we help them sign up for a plan, we screen everyone to see if they are eligible for any of the the Extra Help program to save them money— as much as possible for their prescription drug costs," Carr said.

The Extra Help program reduces out-of-pocket drug coverage costs for certain individuals who qualify.
