After three losses to start the season and two more games canceled because of a lack of players, Valley Lutheran had no problem facing a little more adversity.

The Chargers fell behind 26-6 in the third quarter only to score 27 consecutive points to beat Coleman, 33-26, in the regular-season finale Thursday for both football teams.

“Our kids really responded well, dug deep and pulled it out,” Valley Lutheran coach Joe Willey said. “Valley has folded in the past when down like this. Our boys really stepped up. Their summer conditioning, lifting and speed training was a huge part of the reason we still had gas in the tank at the end.”

Conner Schrank was a dominating force for Coleman, running 27 times for 330 yards, including TD runs of 80 and 57 yards. Konner Carbeno added a 6-yard run, with Ty Klopf scoring on a 1-yard run.

But Valley Lutheran countered with a 69-yard TD run by Scott Smith in the second quarter as Coleman took a 20-6 halftime lead. Smith added a 4-yard TD run to end the third quarter and set up Valley Lutheran’s big fourth quarter.

The Chargers outscored Coleman, 20-0, in the fourth with Eli Frank throwing a pair of TD passes, a 39-yarder to Hans Ross and a 27-yarder to Ben Herzberger. Smith capped the scoring with a 7-yard TD run.

Smith, who finished with 135 yards on 18 carries, led the Valley Lutheran defense with 11 tackles, including two tackles for loss. Frank completed 5 of 9 passes for 109 yards, adding 66 yards rushing on 16 carries.

Soccer

Alma 4, Hemlock 0

Hemlock finished its season at 11-4, falling to Alma, 4-0, in a Division 3 district soccer championship game Thursday at Bullock Creek. Alma’s Connor Lemerand scored 10 seconds into the game, and Leo Richter added the game’s final two goals to send the Panthers into the 5 p.m. regional semifinal Tuesday at Flint’s Atwood Stadium.

“I was really worried about their speed and knew our defense was going to have a tough job against them,” Hemlock coach Joe Wardlow said. "We had a successful season, especially considering the number of changes we made, putting players in different positions.

“It wasn’t easy at first, but as the season went on it was very satisfying to see the players adapt and learn and succeed.”

In the other Division 3 regional semifinal at Atwood, Frankenmuth faces Williamston at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Bad Axe 4, Midland Calvary Baptist 1

Bad Axe improved to 14-1-1 with the Division 4 district championship win over Calvary Baptist. Bad Axe moves on to Division 4 regional at Mount Pleasant for a semifinal game at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Charley Tomko scored the lone goal for Calvary Baptist, which finishes 8-5.

Traverse City Central 2, Midland High 1

The date and the site were different, but Traverse City Central made the trip south worthwhile, edging Midland High to earn a spot in the district final against rival Traverse City West. The teams will play at 1 p.m. Saturday for the title.

Central and Midland were scheduled to play Tuesday in Midland, but Grand Traverse County Health Department officials ordered the bus to return to Traverse City after a positive Covid-19 test at Traverse City Central High School. Once contact tracing was completed, Central was allowed to compete Thursday against Midland.

But because Midland Community Stadium was being used Thursday for the Midland High-Midland Dow junior varsity football game, the soccer district semifinal was moved to Freeland High School.

The game was decided on penalty kicks after the teams tied 1-1 in regulation. Parker Waskiewicz scored the game’s first goal to give Central a 1-0 lead, then followed with a header into his own net to give Dow its lone goal.

After neither team scored in the extra periods, Central won the game with a 4-1 advantage in the penalty-kick shootout. Midland High finishes the season at 8-4-3.
