STAFF REPORT
The Cartersville wrestling program took home the title from the Blue Devil Brawl Saturday at Marietta High.
Thanks to four champions and five runner-up finishes, the Canes edged out the host Blue Devils by a 157.5-134.5 margin to win the seven-team event.
Eaiden Neal went 2-0 to win the 106-pound weight class; Giles Turner won all three of his matches to claim the crown at 132; Camden Greer took both of his matches to place first at 138; and Shadre Hurst, as the only entry in the 285 division, was awarded first place.
As for second-place finishers, Joshua Alvarez won twice before falling in the 126-pound finals. At 152, Brady Jenkins went 1-1 with a loss in the championship round. In a round-robin setup, Earl Harris (160) went 2-1 to finish second. Jairo Martinez wound up 1-1 at 182. Rashun Hurst (1-1 overall) narrowly came up short in what amounted to the 220 championship match.
Earlier in the week, Cartersville finished 3-1 to place second in a five-team duals competition at Alexander. The Canes fell to the host Cougars (66-12) but defeated Hiram (64-12), Central of Carroll County (51-27) and Hampton (forfeit).
Neal and Shadre Hurst earned the only victories for the Canes against the hosts.
Against Hiram, which Cartersville could see again this coming week at the Region 7-AAAAA duals, Turner, Harris, Martinez, and Jackson Heilman all won via pin. Meanwhile, Rashun Hurst earned a major decision victory.
Neal, Jenkins, Rashun Hurst and Shadre Hurst each pinned their Central opponent. Alvarez added a win via major, and Turner won by technical fall.
