The Los Angeles Police Department is launching an internal investigation after a complaint about a photo being passed among officers showing a mock Valentine’s Day card with an image of George Floyd and the words, “You take my breathe away.”

In a statement, the department said the allegations included the claim that the image “was being passed around the department,” and that it was “in the workplace.” Officials said the officer who brought forward the complaint last week would be interviewed.

“If found any employee or supervisor is directed to take possession (of the image) and identify those present,” officials said in the statement. “The Department will have zero tolerance for this type of behavior.”

Jasmyne Cannick, a Los Angeles-based political advisor and activist, on Saturday published an email from an LAPD Harbor Division commander to his staff that described the image, which included a photo of Floyd and the text on a Valentine’s Day-themed background.

The commander wrote that LAPD Chief Michel Moore was “disgusted” by the image.

LAPD has not said in which division the complaint was first filed. And the department said while they’re investigating whether the image was created by an employee, they didn’t yet have any information confirming it came from someone in the department.

The 46-year-old Floyd was killed in May 2020 when Minneapolis police stopped him and an officer knelt on his neck for several minutes.

His brutal death, and the shocking footage that showed how he died, led to anti-police brutality protests around the country, including in Los Angeles.

City Councilwoman Monica Garcia, who represents the Northeast San Fernando Valley and chairs the council’s Public Safety Committee, in a statement on Sunday confirmed the internal investigation. She called the image mocking Floyd “revolting,” and called on LAPD to discipline and even remove any of the officers involved.

“Changing culture requires individuals to speak out and be protected in that process. It also requires zero tolerance for this show of willful stupidity and loathsome behavior, resulting in disciplinary action that should include dismissal for the most egregious participants,” Garcia said in the statement. “Any officer who shared this image undermines those who serve this department and our city honorably.”
