Saturday was a day of celebration for wrestling teams representing Signal Mountain and Baylor as they both won their region tournaments as they get ready for next week’s traditional state tournament that will be held at the Hamilton County Convention & Trade Center.

The Eagles won the Region 3-A/AA for the first time at Eagleville as they put seven individuals in the championship finals and came home with six winners while racking up 227 points and beating runner-up Nolensville by 37 points.

Eagleville was third with 172.5 while Whitwell and East Ridge rounded out the top five teams with 124 and 80 points, respectively.

A lot of folks from the Signal Mountain crowd were happy with the results, but none any more so than head coach Joe Jellison.

“This is our first time to ever win a region championship and I’m absolutely happy and thrilled with today’s results,” he said after making his way back home from the middle Tennessee school.

“Mike Hatcher has come on board as one of our assistant coaches and he’s helped us get to that next level as we’ve never been in better shape.  We have some hammers in our lineup with some really experienced seniors, but we just wrestled smart, totally outworked our opponents and maximized our points every chance we got.

“The most state qualifiers we’ve ever had is eight and we wanted to break that, so we did with nine.  I think we’re ready for next weekend, but we aren’t done yet.  This was just a qualifying tournament for our most important tournament of the year and this is the first step.

“I’m confident that we can put five or six in the finals, but we just have to keep executing.  We’re ready as all the hard work has been done.  It’s all about fine-tuning and staying focused, but I feel like we are a better tournament team than one for duals,” Jellison added.

The three Uhorchuk brothers all won titles with eighth grader Ethan winning at 106, sophomore Caleb taking first at 113 and senior Daniel taking all the marbles at 126.  Other champions for the Eagles included Noah Shriner at 120, Kale Albritton at 138 and Preston Worley at 195.

In addition to the six champions, Signal's other state qualifiers include Brock Shipley at 145, Muschel at 182 and Daniel Odom at 285, who finished third, second and fourth, respectively.

Caleb Uhorchuk and Worley were picked as the Outstanding Wrestlers for the lower and upper weights, respectively, while the 182-pound final between Forrest’s Noah Hill and Signal’s Kevin Muschel earned Best Match.  Hill is now 27-0 after his win, but was trailing by a big margin before catching Muschel in a mistake and getting the pin with 16 seconds left in the match.

Eagleville had three winners in Brody McLemore at 145, Donnovin Darnell at 160 and Wyatt McLemore at 170 while Nolensville had two champs in Tate Crowell at 152 and Bailey Black at 220.  The other two winners included Whitwell’s Brice Barton at 132 and East Nashville’s Kaymor Overton, who posted a tough 3-0 decision over Howard’s Jermichael Young at 285.

While Signal Mountain was dominating the action at Eagleville, Baylor rolled to its third straight Division II-East Region title at Knoxville Catholic Saturday with six champions and 281 points.

McCallie was a distant second with 161 points and three champs while MBA, Lakeway Christian and Boyd Buchanan completed the top five teams with 154, 107 and 97 points, respectively.

It’s been a challenging season for Baylor’s first-year head coach Rex Kendle and his Red Raiders as they didn’t get to compete in nearly as many dual meets or tournaments as they normally participate in.  But these last few weeks have been nothing but hard work and the effort paid off for the guys in red and gray.

“I felt like we had a pretty good day as we wrestled well from top to bottom,” Kendle said while traveling down I-75 on his way home Saturday night.

“I was really proud of every man on our team, but especially so for Jackson Bond, who came back from a tough loss to McCallie Jack Braman to win today.  He’s worked really hard to get ready for today’s match and it paid off.

“I was heartbroken for Elijah Turner, who is our freshman 132 pounder.  He had the toughest weight and barely missed qualifying.  But we did well for the most part and we just have to believe in our training.  This is the first time all season we’ve wrestled on back-to-back weekends, but we’re about to start feeling like a real wrestling team again.

“I think we’re on track as we’re where we need to be.  We have the guys to put the points on the board.  Now we just have to go out and do it,” he added matter of factly.

Baylor’s six winners included Kade Hartline at 106, Nick Corday at 113, Bond at 126, Garrison Dendy at 145, Gunnar Garriques at 182 and David Harper at 195 while McCallie’s three winners included Emory Taylor at 152, Gavin Cagle at 160 and Alex Whitworth at 170, who was named the tournament Outstanding Wrestler.

The 126-pound final between Baylor’s Bond and McCallie’s Braman was voted Best Match.

Lakeway Christian had two winners at 120 in Keveyon Roller and at 138 in Brayden Ivy while MBA had two winners in Gabe Fisher at 220 and Max Fisher at 285.  The only other winner was  Boyd Buchanan’s Conor Payne at 132.

Baylor has 13 individual qualifiers while McCallie has seven, Boyd Buchanan four, Notre Dame five and Chattanooga Christian two.

Baylor's additional qualifiers include Micah Tisdale at 138, Anthony Mannella at 160, Omaury Alvarez at 170 and Matthew Smith at 285, who all finished second.  Judson Jarrett (120), Porter Kaufman (152) and Heath Snodgrass (220) all finished third.

The D-II tournament will be held on Friday.
