Good morning and welcome to your Morning Matters — with “Editor 2.0” Justin Dennis.
It’s Monday, Nov. 15, 2021, and the Catholic Diocese of Youngstown is now reviewing a new claim of misconduct against a local priest.
The diocese announced Sunday that the Rev. Marian Babjak of Struthers’ Christ Our Savior Parish was placed on administrative leave last week pending an investigation into allegations that he had “inappropriate physical contact” with a minor.
What happens now: Babjak will remain a priest but won’t have any official duties or public appearances as the diocese and children services investigate the charge. The parish’s former pastor was appointed to lead in his absence.
What’s different this time: The diocese on Sunday said it will seek to protect not only the accuser’s rights but also Babjak’s, citing the pastor’s “right to a good reputation.” Since 2018, the diocese has named about 40 associated clergy members with “credible” accusations of abuse against them. At least two have since filed lawsuits against the diocese for defamation, including one who was misidentified and whose name was later removed from that list.
You can speak out: Anyone who has been abused by a local clergy member or diocese employee is being urged to contact the diocese’s victims coordinator at 330-744-8451, ext. 293, or dcolucy@youngstowndiocese.org.
