(KWWL) - It's severe weather season here in Iowa and insurance companies are receiving a number of hail damage claims. Typically claim specialists go to a case's house, climb up the roofs, and inspect the damages. However, State Farm has figured out a different method. The company uses drones.
State Farm has been using drones for a few years now, but when the pandemic hit, it became the perfect time to inspect damage from a distance.
Claim specialist and drone pilot, Joy Hillsman-Caffe, said the drones are able to capture the size of a penny and have been a major tool for inspections.
"First and for most, social distancing. It allows, you know, for us to go out there and inspect the roof very quickly," Hillsman-Caffe said, "it normally takes about 15 to 20 minutes so it's very efficient."
In the past few weeks, Hillsman-Caffe said State Farm has received up to three thousand hail damage claims across Iowa. Since the beginning of the pandemic, claims have been handled virtually and drones are another tool the company uses.
Hillman-Caffe told "KWWL" the drones have been a great addition and the customers love it.
"Customers, they love it. For instance, I have a customer that their kids they want to see it, you know everyone wants to see what the drone is doing."
The drones are not flown by all State Farm reps. Only a handful of claim specialists that are licensed to fly the drones and perform the service.
Drone inspections can be done all over the country.
