The Detroit Tigers have claimed right-hander Carson Fulmer, a hard-throwing former top-10 draft pick they believe has the potential to provide immediate help.
The Chicago White Sox placed Fulmer on waivers Thursday. Fulmer was expected to join the Tigers on Saturday. After Saturday's win in Cincinnati, the team announced that David McKay would be sent to Toledo to make room for Fulmer on the 30-man roster.
today and the team will announce a corresponding move on its 30-man roster once he reports.
Fulmer, 26, has struggled since the Sox made him the eighth overall pick in 2015 out of Vanderbilt. He has appeared in 44 games in the majors with 15 starts, posting a 6.56 ERA, a 1.637 WHIP and a 6-9 record.

The Tigers haven’t decided which role Fulmer will fill, whether it’s as a long reliever or as a spot starter at the back end of the rotation.
“We’ll see how it goes,” Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said. “Let’s get him here first. Once we do that we’ll see where he’s at and how much he’s done as far as innings and pitches and all those things.
More from Seidel: Tigers looked thrown off by strangest thing I ever saw at a ballpark
“He’s a high-velocity guy, he throws the living fire out of the ball. He’s had a tendency to misfire a little bit, so we’re going to have to first get him to throw the ball over the plate. With that stuff, he should be successful. He’s not one of those high picks for no reason. He’s got a great arm. Now it’s about being able to get out in the big leagues throwing the ball over (the plate).”
