Tigers claim former White Sox prospect, first-round pick - mlive.com

The Detroit Tigers have claimed right-handed reliever Carson Fulmer on waivers from the Chicago White Sox.

The 26-year-old was the No. 9 overall pick in the 2015 draft out of Vanderbilt University and was once a well-regarded pitching prospect.

The White Sox opted to move on this summer after watching Fulmer endure years of control problems. Because Fulmer had no options remaining, he could not be freely transferred off the Major League roster. The White Sox were forced to designate him for assignment and place him on waivers. The Tigers, who have the top waiver priority by virtue of their league-worst record in 2019, swooped in to claim him.

Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said Fulmer was flying to Cincinnati to join the big-league club. He said the Tigers believe he can help the team immediately.

“I don’t think we would have got him if we didn’t believe that,” Fulmer said. “That’s a big arm, and our people think highly of him.”

To free up a roster spot to make room for Fulmer, the Tigers will likely option one of their young relievers to Toledo. They have not announced that corresponding move.

Fulmer has struggled with walks through almost all his career in the major and minor leagues.

In 94 2/3 MLB innings, he’s walked 64 and struck out 83, posting a 6.56 ERA.

“He’s a high-velocity guy,” Gardenhire said. “He throws the living fire out of the ball. He has a tendency to misfire a little bit.”

According to Baseball Savant, Fulmer primarily relied on a four-seam fastball (93.6 mph average) and cutter (87.9 mph) in 2019, mixing in a change and curve less frequently.
