Jenna Ellis, once an attorney for former President Donald Trump, believes he won the election but said he can't resume his place in the White House until the next election, a position Sidney Powell, an attorney who filed election challenges on Trump's behalf, disagrees with.
President Joe Biden's inauguration prompted many to give up the hope that something would change to put Trump in the White House for a second term. However, some, including several pastors and Powell, believe that Trump can simply take over the reins of the country from Biden.
During the "For God & Country Patriot Roundup" conference on Saturday, Powell said Trump can "simply be reinstated." A comment that elicited cheers from the crowd, Powell said Trump should be "moved back in" to the White House, but noted he wouldn't be given "credit for time lost."
"Because the Constitution itself sets the date for inauguration. But he should definitely get the remainder of his term and make the best of it. That's for sure," Powell said of her baseless claims.
Ellis disagreed. She posted on Twitter that impeachment and conviction is the only process to remove a sitting president, so "No, President Trump is not going to be 'reinstated.'"
She went on to explain that even if Biden was removed from office by way of impeachment, the Constitution illustrates the line of succession. First, Vice President Kamala Harris would take over, then the Speaker of the House, followed by the President pro tempore of the Senate and members of the former president's cabinet.
Nowhere in the line of succession is a former president, unless that person happens to hold a leadership position in Congress or the current administration.
"The states had their opportunity to cure the corruption before January 20; they refused," Ellis wrote on Twitter in reference to Biden's inauguration. "This is entirely on the GOP."
The Trump team attempted to separate themselves from Powell after she faced criticism for bizarre statements he made during press conferences and said she was not an official part of the former president's team.
Ellis, however, was instrumental in Trump's fight to stay in office and teamed up with the former president's personal attorney Rudy Guiliani to push court cases and claims that Biden didn't duly win the presidential election. None of the cases yielded the result the former president wanted—to overturn the election—and so far, no evidence of widespread voter fraud has come to light.
Trump's continued pushing the belief that the election was stolen from him since he left office and Ellis holds onto the same mentality. She posted affirmatively on Twitter that Trump won the election and that GOP state legislatures were "utterly spineless."
However, she reiterated that doesn't mean Trump can be reinstated. Instead, she said it's vital to ensure the "utter disregard for states' election laws" that happened in November "never happens again."
"Just because we can't 'reinstate' Trump does NOT mean we give up or that we lost. If our founders gave up, we'd still be British!" Ellis wrote.
