For only the second time since the inception of the Southern California Championships in 2009, a boys volleyball team from San Diego captured a championship.
Morse downed El Camino in four sets to win the Division V crown Saturday at home.
Francis Parker’s SoCal championship in 2013 — the Lancers beat Torrance Bishop Montgomery in five sets in Division III — was the last time a San Diego team claimed the top spot.
Parker lost its other two SoCal finals, once in 2009 and again in 2011.
Otay Ranch lost the Division I finals in 2011 and ’12 while Classical Academy (Division II in 2018), La Costa Canyon (Division II in 2013), Mt. Carmel (Division II in 2010) and Santa Fe Christian (Division III in 2010) lost championship matches before this year.
Also on Saturday, Torrey Pines (17-5) lost the Division II finals to Huntington Beach 22-25, 25-17, 26-24, 25-27, 15-11 at home while Carlsbad (11-11) also went five sets before losing the Division III final to No. 1 Huntington Beach Marina 25-15, 20-25, 23-25, 25-23, 15-7 on the road.
It was Marina’s first SoCal title in boys volleyball.
“Marina played out of its mind in the first and we trailed in the second and third sets but won them both,” Carlsbad coach Andy Tomkinson said by phone on Sunday. “We were a couple of points from winning it all in the fourth set when they scored a couple of points.
“I think most people in the gym, including me, thought we had the momentum in the fourth set.
“The match was ours, but it got away from us.”
Cooper Moore led Carlsbad with 14 kills followed by Zach Knudsen with 13 kills and Max MacCallum with eight kills.
Daniel Purtell took game honors for Marina with 31 kills. Aidden Patterson added 21 kills for the Vikings.
