Glover Teixiera claimed the UFC’s light heavyweight belt on Saturday in Abu Dhabi, submitting Jan Blachowicz via second-round submission. After a battle against the cage, Teixeira was able to take his opponent’s back and get him to the mat. He landed some hard punches from above before flattening Błachowicz out and sinking in the rear-naked choke.
It was a feel-good moment for Teixeira who, at 42, became the oldest first-time champion in modern UFC history.
“Twenty years, baby. I have no words to describe it,” he said after the win. “Never give up on your dreams. Believe in yourself and keep going forward.”
In the co-main event, former UFC bantamweight champion Petr Yan punched his ticket back to a title shot with a dominant unanimous decision win over Cory Sandhagen. After dropping the first round in which Sandhagen picked and popped with shots from the outside, Yan took it up a notch from the second round on.
It was clear Sandhagen had no match for Yan’s power and speed in his hands. Every shot Yan landed appeared more significant than anything Sandhagen threw. Yan eventually dropped his opponent with a spinning back fist followed by a left hook in the third. He jumped and added hard ground-and-pound to finish the round. He cruised from then on.
“Everyone knows I’m the the real champion,” he said after. “I'm here to fight anyone. It's either going to be (T.J.) Dillashaw or the clown (Aljamain) Sterling."
Yan held the UFC bantamweight belt but lost it last year after he landed an illegal knee on Sterling. His opponent could not continue and the title was given to Sterling.
Elsewhere on the card: Islam Makhachev won his ninth straight bout after he submitted Dan Hooker by first-round kimura, Alexander Volkov cruised to a unanimous decision win over Marcin Tybura in a battle of top heavyweights and rising star Khamzat Chimaev finished Li Jingliang via first-round rear-naked choke.
