JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Central Arkansas broke out of their losing streaks as they won their second ASUN matchup 3-1.
The Sugar Bears entered into this match on a level playing field as their opponent, as they both have struggled getting their footing in the ASUN Crossover. UCA took that as an advantage as they ended up posting a dominant showing against Jacksonville University in a 3-1 victory. Leading the charge in this winning effort was an unlikely candidate in sophomore April Conant. Conant got her third start of the year and made use of it as she led the squad with ten kills on a .400 hitting percentage. Sophomore Anna Myers also had a big day as she posted yet another double-double after posting 41 assists and ten digs; this marks her fourth double-double of the season.
Set 1:
The first set was a long time coming as the Sugar Bears forgot their ten set skid and found a way to finish strong against the Dolphins. This opening phase also saw UCA hit one of their best marks in a while as they posted a .290 hitting percentage while only allowing a .212 percentage for JAX. That proved big in the middle part of the set as UCA was initially down 14-13; however, a 6-1 run made it 18-15. Alongside an ending run of five straight, the Sugar Bears eventually won the first set, 25-21.
Set 2:
The next set was more on the errors of Jacksonville than anything UCA did. The Dolphins dropped 13 errors which eventually led to their finally hitting percentage of -.091. Those mistakes led to big runs as the Sugar Bears completely dominated on their way to a 25-16 set win.
Set 3:
The Sugar Bears roll stopped in the third, as the Dolphins found movement late into the set. The biggest run of the match happened late as JAX scored nine straight points to get the lead at 23-19. That momentum boast that happened late controlled the fate of the set as we were destined for more than three as the Dolphins won 25-22.
Set 4:
The fourth set was a back and forth affair for much of it as both teams continued to regain the lead. However, the stand that made the difference was when UCA went on a 4-1 run in the middle of the set. That rally put them up two, which made all the difference as they slowly increased the lead in this close contest. With one last push, the Sugar Bears finished with another rally as they went on a 5-1 split to eventually conclude the match after a 25-20 set victory.
Next, the Sugar Bears will head home to battle Lipscomb at 6 p.m. Oct. 29 in the Prince Center.
Quote from head coach John Newberry:
"I'm really proud of this win. I thought we stuck to our offensive game plan very well. We had to make some defensive adjustments and I thought the team executed the new plans very well."
"I'm really proud of Anna Myers and her distribution of the ball. I thought she made really good decisions. Lastly, I'm really proud of April Conant. She really spurred the team along these last two games and put up some great numbers. Her words to the team were greatly needed."
