Two Aurora police officers shot a man Tuesday who they say fired first.
According to the Aurora Police Department, the incident began at 12:30 p.m., when they received reports of domestic violence, including screaming and a gunshot, inside an apartment in the 2300 block of S. Xanadu Way.
“When officers arrived on scene, they were confronted by a man with a gun,” Aurora Police Chief Vanessa Wilson told reporters Tuesday afternoon. “He was out in front of the apartment building.”
According to Wilson, officers took cover and ordered the man to drop the weapon. Instead, the man fired one round and was shot by police. He was then arrested, rushed into surgery and is expected the survive, the police chief said.
The two officers were not injured. They will be placed on administrative leave in accordance with department protocol and the 18th Judicial District will investigate the shooting. The officers’ body cameras were activated before the shooting, Wilson said.
This is the fifth time in three weeks that Aurora officers have shot someone, according to the police chief. She described the unnamed officers in this case as “veteran officers” who “did a fantastic job” and may have saved the domestic violence victim’s life.
