Cubs Claim Johneshwy Fargas from Mets, Move Brad Wieck to 60-Day IL - Cubs Insider

The Cubs have acquired a player from the Mets, though it’s got nothing to do with all the rumors. The team announced Friday that 26-year-old outfielder Johneshwy Fargas has been claimed off waivers from the Mets and optioned to Triple-A Iowa.

Fargas has hit .254 with 71 doubles, 18 triples, 27 home runs, 182 RBI, and 246 stolen bases in 604 career minor league games. He was selected by the Giants in the 11th round of the 2013 draft out of the Puerto Rico Baseball Academy and spent seven years in their system before signing with the Mets as a minor league free agent in January of 2020.

Fargas made his MLB debut with the Mets this season, hitting .286 with three doubles, a triple, and three RBI in 22 plate appearances. He was placed on the 10-day IL on May 25 with a left AC joint sprain of his shoulder and was reinstated before being designated for assignment on July 19.

Perhaps this signals the Cubs are going to need a little outfield depth in the next few days. In order to make room on the roster, Brad Wieck was transferred to the 60-day IL due to an irregular heartbeat. Wieck is scheduled to undergo a second cardiac ablation to correct the issue and could be throwing again soon after, but the club doesn’t need to rush anything with him.
