SHINNSTON — Following a canceled season in 2020, the Elkins Otters swim team fiercely came back to prevail at the North Central Swim League Championship held in Shinnston last weekend.
Although it was a shortened season due to COVID restrictions, Lauren Cain was ready to get the team back in action with the aim of winning her fourth straight championship as coach.
Many newcomers joined the veterans, for a team membership of 79 athletes. The group worked hard and put in more travel time than usual, as all the swim meets were away since there is no outdoor public pool in Randolph County.
Despite the season’s hardships and great competition in the league, especially from Club Mountaineer in Morgantown, the team put up a steadfast performance, winning all of the regular- season meets as well.
After the championship in Shinnston, Cain expressed her pride in her team.
“We saw so many personal best times and had several high-point winners that all contributed to the team win,” Cain said.
Owen Guthrie and Isaac Anger, both in the 13-14-year-old division, each set an impressive four new records.
Guthrie earned first-place high point in his division, while Anger earned second. Other high-point winners included Rachel Shryock (first place, 13-14), Lillian Anger (second place, 11-12), Kyan George (third place, 9-10), Kenadi Carte (first place, 9-10) and Kyndall Monk (third place, 9-10).
Giving a substantial boost in points, the relay teams were also an integral part of clinching the victory.
“This year’s championship meet was the largest I remember ever seeing –nearly 400 swimmers –with so much talent from all of the competing teams,” Cain said. “It really took a full team-effort to win with so many talented swimmers in the water.
“I was truly amazed at how well our team pulled together to reclaim the trophy.”
