STILLWATER, NY – Georgia Greene used her head to give Shenendehowa a lead 81 seconds into the Section 2 Class AA girls’ soccer championship. That is all the Plainsmen would need in order to claim the title.

“When I saw [Emily] Silva cross that ball in, it was going right to me and I knew I had to put it in the back of the net,” said Green, a senior forward.

The Shen defense remained strong the rest of the way, as they came away with a 1-0 victory.

“If felt great in the moment, but the next 79 minutes were filled with plenty of stress,” Shenendehowa coach Holli Nirsberger said of scoring early. “We were hoping for another one, but we’ll take the one.”

Just over a minute into the game the Plainsmen earned a corner kick opportunity, which was taken by Silva and found Greene’s head, giving Shen the lead.

“We don’t usually score that early in the game. It helped a lot. It kept the energy going for the rest of the game and I’m glad I put it in the back of the net, with my head,” Greene said.

“We scored right off the bat,” added senior forward Brooke DelSignore. “Georgia getting that quick goal really pumped us up and gave us an adrenaline rush. We knew we were secure from there.”

Shen’s defensive game plan was to shut down Columbia’s senior forward, Kaiden Ring (#2), and their pair of freshman midfielders who have excelled at getting her the ball – Isabella Seibert (#8) and Kennedy Ring (#12).

“Our defense has done so much work,” Nirsberger said. “Number two is very dangerous. Eight and twelve are very dangerous getting the ball to her and she’s so fast. We didn’t want her to hurt us by getting the ball in behind us.”

“We always do a Player of the Match and today it was our whole defense, from [goalkeeper] Eva Pflomm to the four in front of her.”

“They worked so hard in practice, they’re basically unstoppable,” DelSignore said of her team’s defense. “I practice with them everyday and it’s a struggle getting by them.”

The Plainsmen now move on to the Regional Championship next weekend where they face the Section 3 champion, Fayetteville-Manlius.

“Getting through the sectional final and knowing that we have more games, more practices with this team, it means a lot. We have work to do and we’re going to get after it,” DelSignore said.

“We’re excited to go on to regionals and to see how far we can go,” Greene said.
