Saginaw Nouvel survived an off-shooting night to capture a Division 4 boys basketball district title Saturday and earn a spot in the regional.

Nouvel made just 3 of 18 from the 3-point line, but scored enough to knock off Midland Calvary Baptist, 66-59, at Akron-Fairgrove.

Nouvel advances to the Division 4 regional at Midland High and will face 12-2 Ubly at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday. Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart (17-1) faces Hale (11-2) in the 7 p.m. game.

Nouvel overcame a 3-18 shooting night from 3 to capture the district title.

“It wasn’t our prettiest game, but we really came together tonight when it counted,” Nouvel coach Mike Kessler said. “I think we are starting to believe in ourselves to get it done in the tight games, and belief is big this time of year.”

Devin Smith led Nouvel with 19 points, eight assists and five steals, with Jonathan Tunney scoring 18 points and eight rebounds. MJ Yeager followed with 12 points, while Jack Kujawa scored eight points with 11 rebounds.

Eric Grabill scored 27 points for Calvary Baptist, with Toby Stauffer adding 15 points.

Division 1

At Midland High

Midland High 44, Mount Pleasant 42

Midland earned a two-point win, improving to 10-5 in claiming a district championship over Saginaw Valley League rival Mount Pleasant.

The Chemics advance to the Division 1 regional semifinal at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Traverse City Central against 12-3 Marquette. If Midland wins, it would take on the Flushing-Grand Blanc winner at 7 p.m. Thursday at Midland Dow.

Division 2

At Alma

Shepherd 49, Alma 43

Shepherd improved to 9-8, knocking off Alma to earn a Division 2 district title. Shepherd heads to the Owosso regional, where it will take on Carrollton at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Alma finishes the season at 11-5.
