Saginaw Nouvel coach Michael Kessler couldn’t have dreamed of a better start.
Fortunately, the Panthers were able to have a second good start.
Nouvel knocked off Ubly, 55-46, Tuesday at Midland High to advance to the Division 4 regional final at 6 p.m. Thursday against 18-1 Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart, which beat Hale, 61-49, in the other regional semifinal.
Nouvel took a 22-9 lead to start the game, but the Panthers watched as Ubly came back to tie the game at 32-32 at halftime. But Nouvel’s defense allowed just 14 points in the second half to improve to 9-8.
“Our guys came out hot and executing the game plan,” Kessler said. “When Ubly came back and tied it at half, we did a great job handling it.
“It’s the toughest thing in basketball to build a good lead, have a team come back, and then finish it.”
MJ Yeager led the Panthers with 27 points, with Jonathan Tunney scoring 12 points with seven rebounds.
In a pair of other regional semifinals involving Saginaw-area teams, Midland High finished the season with a 10-6 record after dropping a 54-48 Division 1 regional semifinal decision to Marquette, with Ithaca ending its season at 8-10 after a 63-60 Division 3 regional semifinal loss to North Muskegon.
